Malbun, Triesenberg - Liechtenstein's ski resort

Malbun - Liechtenstein's mountain paradise in winter and in summer

In ancient times, Malbun was the home of ghosts, and any people or cattle left in the valley when the first snows arrived would most likely freeze to death. The locals called on a mythical 'yeti'-like creature called the Wildmändli to look after their cattle when they prepared the winter sheds, but these creatures disappeared at the first sign of snow, so were unreliable.

Nowadays these ghosts have been banished and Malbun, at 1600 metres above sea level makes for a great winter ski resort. Whilst there are not many tough runs, it is an ideal family destination as all the runs finish in the middle of the village, and many of the runs are ideally suited to less able skiers.

In summer, however, the valley takes on a different appearance, and numerous footpaths crisscross the mountains and meadows. There are also numerous restaurants and bars open in summer and in winter to allow the visitor to recover whilst enjoying the clean mountain air.

Regular post-buses ferry visitors up from the Rhine valley at regular intervals, and a chair lift can take you up to 2000 metres above sea level to enjoy a birds eye view of Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Austria. The restaurant Sareis, at the top of the lift offers refreshment, even if you don't intend to walk down to the village from there.
